A Preliminary Study for the Development of Prepared Childbirth Education Program


Abstract
The purpose of this study is to be of ` help in developing an educational program by asking opinions about prepared childbirth education(PCE) and examine variables that have an important effect upon the intention of participation and practicing of PCE:¢¥- ,
The subjects of the study were 235 pregnant women who visited the two obstetric clinics of C college in Seoul for antenatal care from Dec. 1990 to Jan. 1991.
The results of this study were
1. Related information on PCE and opinions content composing
1) Sixty three percent of the subjects had informed about the PCE, and the major source of information was mass media(23.0%), medical facilities(13.2%), public brochure(5.5%) and those who have experience in participation of the PCE were only 13 persons(5.5%).
2) Those who have opinion that PCE is necessary for all pregnant women were 61.7% and those expressed that they sometimes need the PCE were 33.2%.
3) Among expected effects of PCE, alleviation of fear and anxiety upon delivery ranked first(33.0%), understanding and acquisition of knowledge for pregnancy and delivery ranked second(17.2%), alleviation of labor pain ranked third(15.0%), and getting healthy newborn baby and also prevention of obstetrical complication ranked fourth(14.3% respectively).
4) For the desired content of education, development and, physiology of fetus and breathing technique for alleviation of pain ranked first(13.8% respectively) and preparation and caring for the newborn baby ranked third(13.2%).
5) As for the beginning time for education, 86.8% desired before second trimester regardless of the present term of pregnancy, and 16.7% of subjects said they could attend with their husband six weekly classes for two hours a week. 81.7% of them desired afternoon time for education, and 88.6% selected weekend.
6) For the desired method of education, utilization of pictures on screen ranked first(33.8%), lectures ranked second(23.8%), and training method ranked third(22.1%) ; responses for expenses 53.5% of them will participate even if they meet their expenses.
2. Related variables on attending intention and practice will for PCE program
1) Related variables on attending intention for PCE program indicated that women with 1-1.5 million won monthly income had an odd ratio(OR) of 0.12 compared with those have 0.5million income. Women who desired to have two or more children had an OR of 0.41 compared with those desired one child. Women with no plan before pregnancy had an OR of 0.50 compared with those had plan before pregnancy. The more they have higher support scores, the higher attending intention was shown(OR 1.05). Women having other person supported had an OR of 0.35 compared with those being supported by her husband.
2) Related variables on practice will for PCE exercise, the more having old husbands, the low practice will(OR 0.86). Those women having no religion showed an OR of 0.39 compared with those having religion. Those women who had husband of public officer showed an OR of 0.09 compared with those women having husband of professional job. The more they have higher support scores, the higher practice will was shown(OR 1.12). Women expecting other person¢¥s support during labor had an OR of 0.53 compared with being supported by her husband. Women expecting other person¢¥s support during delivery had an OR of 0.26 compared with being supported by her husband. Those women who had previous information for PCE . program had an OR of 1.76 compared with those having no previous information. .
